Understanding Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy combines psychotherapy with hypnosis. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses practical, structured and well-researched strategies that help people to make significant, positive and quick changes in their lives. Solution Focused therapists always focus on what their client wants to achieve rather than at the reason that prompted them to seek help.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis or trance state is a natural state, we all naturally go in and out of trance many times during the day – when we are driving, reading a book, out for runs – in this relaxed state, we experience changes in our conscious awareness, almost like being in a day-dream. Whilst in trance state, our unconscious mind is more aware and able to focus on helpful suggestions and thoughts.

Is hypnosis safe? Am I in control?

Trance is a safe state, contrary to what we sometimes see on films, television or during stage hypnosis shows, trance cannot control your mind. During hypnosis, we are still in control and can decide whether the information that we are hearing is useful to us or not, and we would not accept or do anything against our will.

Why is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy different from other forms of Hypnotherapy?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses a specific structure: incorporating aspects of Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT); combining these with an understanding of how the mind works according to the latest neuroscience research; together with the use of hypnosis. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is also different because it does not need to delve into a person’s past, as this is not necessary to help the person moving forward and plan how they want to live their best life in the future.

Ask a question

What can I expect during a Solution Focused Hypnotherapy session?

Your experience will depend on the reasons why you are seeking therapy as well as the timescale we are working with. I will be able to put a plan together for you after our Initial Consultation.

During our initial Consultation, you can expect:

  • To complete a consent form.
  • Have a discussion about the problems you aim to address using hypnotherapy.
  • Discuss your aims and goals for the future.
  • Answer general questions about yourself and any details that are relevant.
  • Look at how the brain functions and understand the Solution Focused process.
  • We will then discuss how many sessions you might need and what we hope to achieve in our upcoming sessions.
  • I will give you an audio for you to listen when it is time to go to sleep at night. This will help the process and re-organise your sleep patterns. The content of this recording will be very similar to the hypnosis that you will be enjoying in our sessions. So that you can get an idea of what it is like, you can listen to a sample of the relaxation that we do at the beginning of our trance session by clicking on these links below.

The session format and techniques used can vary depending on the issue we are working on i.e. anxiety, smoking cessation, phobia, etc., but the most typical hypnotherapy session format that you can expect after our Initial Consultation, would be the following:

  • I will ask you about your week.
  • Following this, I will discuss aspects about how the brain functions and how it relates to your experience.
  • After this we will scale your progress and establish and discuss the goals you want to achieve.
  • At the end of the session, after we have discussed your goals, I will invite you to relax and will speak and guide you gently into a relaxed state. Here you can enjoy resting in a day-dream-like trance state, where your mind can focus on, absorb, and reflect on the things that we have discussed during your session.
